Chapter 10 - Wave Optics
1. Wavefront & Huygens Principle - How Light Spreads
Think of dropping a stone in a still pond. Ripples spread out as circles. Light also spreads like that. A wavefront is a line joining all points that have same phase, like same point in ripple.
Three types: Spherical wavefront from a point source nearby like a bulb, plane wavefront far away like sun rays coming almost straight, cylindrical from a line source.
Huygens Principle says every point on a wavefront acts as a new source of tiny ripples called secondary wavelets. These spread in all directions at speed of light c. The new wavefront is the outer boundary touching all these tiny ripples.
Daily picture: Crowd doing a Mexican wave in stadium. Each person standing creates next wave. Envelope of all small actions becomes big wavefront.
Wavefront = same phase line | Types: spherical point, plane far, cylindrical line | Huygens: every point source of secondary wavelets | New front = envelope of wavelets
Visual Learning Method: 4 panels. Panel 1 stone in pond circular ripples spherical wavefront, Panel 2 far sun straight lines plane wavefront, Panel 3 each point small wavelet, Panel 4 envelope makes new front. Kids Wow! yellow boxes, ink on cream.
Daily Analogy: Water ripple from stone is light wavefront. Each water drop on crest makes its own tiny ripple - that is Huygens secondary wavelet. Big wave is sum of tiny ripples.
Wavefront & Huygens Principle - How Light Spreads
Revision Points - Easy:
- Wavefront is line of same phase, like same height of ripple.
- Close bulb gives spherical, far sun gives plane.
- Huygens: each point makes tiny new wavelets, envelope = next wavefront.
- This idea explains reflection and refraction later.
2. Reflection & Refraction via Huygens - Proving Laws with Waves
Using Huygens we can prove laws we learnt in ray optics. For reflection, a wavefront hits a mirror. Time taken for one end to hit and form wavelet must equal time for other end. Geometry gives angle in equals angle out i = r. No magic, just equal time.
For refraction, wavefront goes from faster medium to slower. Imagine soldiers marching from road to mud. Those who enter mud first slow down, so line turns. If speed in first medium is v1 and second is v2, time matching gives n1 sin i = n2 sin r where n = c/v. If v2 less than v1, ray bends towards normal. Exactly Snell law.
Key point: Frequency never changes, only wavelength and speed change because n = c/v = lambda_vac / lambda_medium.
Reflection proof i=r via equal time | Refraction n1 sin i=n2 sin r via slowing | n=c/v | Frequency same, lambda changes | Soldiers road to mud turns
Visual Learning Method: Left incident wavefront AB hitting mirror, secondary wavelets, reflected front, triangle proof i=r. Right wavefront hitting glass slows, bending, marching band from road to sand analogy, yellow boxes Snell.
Daily Analogy: Marching band goes from hard road to sandy ground. First row slows early, whole band turns. Light does same when entering denser glass, turns towards normal.
Reflection & Refraction via Huygens - Proving Laws
Revision Points - Easy:
- Reflection: i = r proved because time for wavelets equal.
- Refraction: light slows in denser medium, so bends. n1 sin i = n2 sin r.
- Frequency stays same, wavelength becomes shorter in denser medium.
- Easy memory: road to mud = rarer to denser = towards normal.
3. Superposition & Coherent Sources - Waves Meeting
When two waves meet, they add up. This is superposition. If crest meets crest, bigger crest bright. Crest meets trough, they cancel dark. This is interference.
For clear pattern, sources must be coherent meaning same frequency and constant phase difference, like twins marching in step. If phase keeps changing randomly, pattern washes out.
Two conditions: path difference and phase difference link: phase diff = (2pi / lambda) * path diff. Constructive bright when path diff = n * lambda, phase diff = 2n pi. Destructive dark when path diff = (2n-1) lambda/2, phase diff = (2n-1) pi.
Coherent sources made by splitting same source: Young's double slit, Fresnel biprism, Lloyd mirror. Two independent bulbs cannot give stable interference because random phase jumps.
Superposition: waves add | Constructive crest+crest bright, Destructive crest+trough dark | Coherent = same freq constant phase | Path diff n lambda bright, (2n-1)lambda/2 dark | Phase diff 2n pi bright, (2n-1) pi dark
Visual Learning Method: Two waves sine curves overlapping in phase bigger, out of phase flat, twins marching in step vs random walkers, path diff diagram, yellow boxes formulas, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Two friends on swings. If they swing together (same timing) they go high together bright. If opposite, one forward one back, they cancel at centre dark. Twins = coherent, random people = incoherent.
Superposition & Coherent Sources - Waves Meeting
Revision Points - Easy:
- Two waves add - bigger or zero.
- Bright happens when path difference is whole wavelength multiple.
- Dark when half wavelength multiple.
- Need coherent sources - from same original source, same colour, steady phase.
- Two separate bulbs won't work.
4. Young's Double Slit - Bright and Dark Fringes
Young made two tiny slits S1 and S2 close together, lit by same source. They act like coherent twins. Light from both goes to screen and interferes making alternate bright and dark bands called fringes.
Geometry: slit separation d, distance to screen D, wavelength lambda. At point P path difference = d sin theta ≈ d * y / D. Bright central max at y=0 where path diff zero. Other bright at d sin theta = n lambda. Dark at d sin theta = (2n-1) lambda/2.
Fringe width beta = distance between two bright = lambda D / d. All bright fringes equally spaced. If you use white light, central white but others coloured because lambda different - VIBGYOR spreads.
Intensity pattern: all bright equally bright in ideal YDSE, but in real single slit envelope makes central brightest. Intensity I = 4 I0 cos^2(phi/2) where phi phase diff.
YDSE: S1 S2 coherent twins | Path diff d sin theta = d y / D | Bright n lambda | Dark (2n-1)lambda/2 | Fringe width beta = lambda D / d | All fringes equal width | Intensity 4I0 cos^2(phi/2)
Visual Learning Method: Diagram two slits, screen with bright dark equally spaced, central bright, beta labelled, intensity graph cosine squared, white light colour spread, kids Wow! yellow boxes.
Daily Analogy: Two water taps dripping in same bucket make ripples that cross - where crests meet water high bright, where crest-trough water flat dark. Distance between bright ripples depends on wavelength and gap.
Young's Double Slit - Bright and Dark Fringes
Revision Points - Easy:
- Two close slits from same source = coherent, make bright dark bands.
- Bright when path diff = n lambda, Dark when (2n-1) lambda/2.
- Fringe width beta = lambda D / d - bigger wavelength or screen distance gives wider fringes, smaller slit gap also wider.
- White light gives coloured fringes except central white.
5. Diffraction - Bending Around Obstacles
Diffraction is bending of waves around corners. Sound bends easily around door you hear around corner, light bends little so shadow looks sharp but actually faint light in shadow.
When light passes through narrow opening, it spreads. Single slit diffraction pattern has central bright wide and double width of others, plus dimmer secondary maxima.
Difference vs interference: Interference from two sources many equal bright fringes. Diffraction from single slit one opening spreading, central brightest wide, others dimmer. YDSE actually includes both - diffraction envelope limits interference.
Condition for bending more: gap size comparable to wavelength. Light lambda ~ 500 nm very small so needs very narrow slit ~ microns to see bending. Sound lambda ~ meters so bends around door easily.
Diffraction = bending around corner | Needs gap ~ lambda | Single slit central wide brightest | Sound bends more than light because lambda larger | Interference = two sources many equal, Diffraction = one slit wide central dim sides
Visual Learning Method: Top wave bending around edge, middle narrow slit spreading with central wide peak graph, side sound around open door vs light narrow slit, comparison table interference vs diffraction, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Water through narrow harbour gate spreads in fan. If gate wide, goes straight. Light through tiny gap spreads same way. Sound gate is door, wide enough for sound wave, so spreads you hear around corner.
Diffraction - Bending Around Obstacles
Revision Points - Easy:
- Diffraction means wave bends around edge or through slit.
- More bending when slit size similar to wavelength.
- Single slit pattern: centre bright big, side small dim.
- Sound diffracts easily around door because its wavelength large.
- Interference = two slits equal bright, Diffraction = one slit centre brightest.
6. Single Slit Diffraction & Resolving Power - Limits of Clarity
Single slit width a. Minima dark at a sin theta = n lambda n=1,2... Maxima approx at a sin theta = (2n+1) lambda/2 but not exact. Width of central max = 2 lambda D / a. So narrower slit gives wider central spread, wider slit gives narrower but brighter.
Because of diffraction, lens cannot make point image perfectly sharp, it makes Airy disc. Two close points blur together. Rayleigh criterion says two points just resolved when central max of one falls on first minima of other. Angular separation theta = 1.22 lambda / D for circular aperture D.
Resolving power: Telescope = D / 1.22 lambda, bigger diameter sees finer stars. Microscope = 2 n sin beta / 1.22 lambda, oil immersion n larger better. Electron microscope uses tiny lambda so huge resolution.
Single slit minima a sin theta=n lambda | Central width 2 lambda D / a | Rayleigh just resolved | Telescope angular 1.22 lambda / D | Microscope resolution 2 n sin beta / lambda | Smaller lambda or bigger aperture = better clarity
Visual Learning Method: Single slit a labelled minima formula, central width diagram, Airy disc two overlapping just resolved, telescope big bucket vs small, microscope oil immersion, kids Wow! yellow boxes.
Daily Analogy: Try reading two close dots with blurry glasses - they merge. Diffraction blur is natural limit. Bigger lens is like bigger eyes collects more detail, shorter wavelength is finer pen.
Single Slit Diffraction & Resolving Power - Limits
Revision Points - Easy:
- Single slit dark at a sin theta = n lambda.
- Centre bright width = 2 lambda D / a - narrow slit makes wide blur.
- Diffraction blurs point into disc, two points may merge.
- Just resolved when centre of one on dark of other.
- Telescope needs big mirror, microscope needs oil and small wavelength for better detail.
7. Polarization - Filtering Light
Light is transverse wave - vibration perpendicular to direction. Ordinary light vibrates in all directions around travel. Polarized light vibrates only in one plane.
Polaroid sheet is like a fence with vertical bars - only rope shaking vertical passes, horizontal blocked. First Polaroid makes polarized light, second rotates intensity changes via Malus law I = I0 cos^2 theta where theta angle between polaroids.
Brewster angle: when reflected and refracted rays are 90 degrees, reflected is fully polarized. tan ip = n. Polarization by reflection useful for sunglasses.
Daily uses: Polaroid sunglasses block horizontal glare from water road, 3D glasses have different polarization for each eye, LCD screens use polarizers.
Only transverse waves can be polarized, so polarization proves light is transverse, not longitudinal like sound.
Light transverse | Ordinary unpolarized all directions | Polaroid fence only one vibration passes | Malus I=I0 cos^2 theta | Brewster tan ip=n reflected polarized when r+ip=90 deg | Uses: sunglasses glare, 3D, LCD | Proves transverse nature
Visual Learning Method: Wave vibrating all directions vs one direction, fence analogy rope vertical passes, two polaroids rotating dimming, Brewster diagram 90 deg reflected polarized, sunglasses glare blocked, 3D glasses, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Shake a rope through a vertical fence slot - only vertical shake goes through. Polaroid is that fence for light. Two fences crossed blocks all. Sunglasses fence horizontal glare blocked.
Polarization - Filtering Light
Revision Points - Easy:
- Light vibrates sideways, can be filtered to one direction.
- Polaroid passes only one vibration - like fence.
- Two polaroids: same direction bright, 90 degree dark. Malus cos^2 law.
- Brewster angle tan ip = n gives fully polarized reflection.
- Sunglasses and 3D glasses use this.
- Only transverse waves show polarization.
8. Applications & Final Revision - Everyday Wave Optics
Wave optics is everywhere. Thin film colours soap bubble oil on water - light reflects from top and bottom surfaces interferes, 2 n t = m lambda bright, (m+1/2) lambda dark gives rainbow colours without dye.
Hologram 3D image uses interference of reference and object beam, reconstructs 3D light field.
Doppler effect for light - if source moving away wavelength stretches red shift, towards blue shift. Used to know galaxies moving away universe expanding.
Diffraction limits camera lens sharpness aperture diffraction, so large aperture lenses better but diffraction still limit. CD rainbow is diffraction grating - grooves spaced ~ micron split colours.
Difference between rainbow from ray optics and diffraction colours: rainbow from refraction+TIR in drops, diffraction colours from bending around grating.
Thin film 2nt=m lambda bright | Hologram interference 3D | Doppler red shift away blue towards | CD grating rainbow diffraction | Camera limit diffraction | Rainbow vs diffraction different cause
Visual Learning Method: Soap bubble film interference, hologram 3D cube laser beams, red shift blue shift star moving, CD rainbow grating, kids with polaroid sunglasses glare removed, summary formulas chart, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Soap bubble colours no paint - two reflections interfere like two swings cancelling some colours bright others dark. CD acts like tiny prism fence splitting light.
Applications & Final Revision - Everyday Wave Optics
Revision Points - Easy:
- Soap bubble colours = thin film interference, not pigment.
- Hologram stores interference pattern gives 3D image.
- Red shift galaxy moving away, blue shift coming closer.
- CD colours from diffraction grating grooves.
- Camera sharpness limited by diffraction.
- Remember: interference needs coherent sources, diffraction needs gap ~ lambda, polarization needs transverse.
