Chapter 12 - Atoms
1. Alpha Scattering & Rutherford Model - Discovery of Nucleus
Rutherford shot alpha particles at thin gold foil. Most passed straight, some deflected small angle, very few bounced back 180 degrees. This meant atom is mostly empty space with tiny dense positive nucleus at centre containing mass.
Atom size ~10^-10 m, nucleus ~10^-14 m - like football stadium with marble at centre. Electrons orbit around like planets but Rutherford model failed because accelerating charge should radiate and fall into nucleus.
Distance of closest approach: alpha with kinetic energy K cannot go closer than r0 = (1/4pi epsilon0) * 2Ze^2 / K where Z gold atomic number.
Most alpha straight = atom empty | Few back = tiny nucleus positive dense | Atom 10^-10 m nucleus 10^-14 m | r0 = k 2Ze^2 / K | Rutherford failed - would collapse
Visual Learning Method: Gold foil alpha scattering straight, small deflection, large back, atom empty stadium marble nucleus, formula distance closest approach, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Shooting marbles through forest. Most go through empty gaps, few hit tree trunk and bounce back. Trunk is nucleus small but heavy.
Alpha Scattering & Rutherford Model
Revision Points - Easy:- Alpha experiment showed nucleus exists - tiny positive dense centre.
- Atom mostly empty space.
- Most alpha passed straight, few bounced back.
- Rutherford model unstable - electron should spiral in but doesn't.
2. Bohr Model - Quantized Orbits
Bohr fixed Rutherford by adding quantum rules: Electrons revolve in fixed circular orbits called stationary orbits with fixed energy. No radiation in these orbits so no collapse.
Condition 1: Centripetal force = Coulomb attraction: mv^2/r = (1/4pi epsilon0) Ze^2 / r^2.
Condition 2: Angular momentum quantized: mvr = n h/2pi where n=1,2,3... So only certain radii allowed: rn = n^2 a0 / Z where a0 = 0.53 angstrom = Bohr radius. Velocity vn = 2.2 x10^6 / n m/s for hydrogen. Energy En = -13.6 Z^2 / n^2 eV.
Stationary orbits no radiation | mvr=n h/2pi quantized | rn=n^2 a0/Z a0=0.53A | En=-13.6 Z^2/n^2 eV | vn ~2.2e6/n m/s H
Visual Learning Method: Circular orbits n=1 smallest, n=2 larger, angular momentum n h/2pi, radius formula, energy negative, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Bohr orbits are like fixed floors in building. You can be on floor 1,2,3 not between. Each floor has fixed height energy.
Bohr Model - Quantized Orbits
Revision Points - Easy:- Electrons only in fixed orbits with fixed energy.
- Angular momentum must be n times h/2pi.
- Radius grows as n squared, energy as -1/n squared.
- Ground n=1 smallest most bound -13.6 eV for hydrogen.
3. Energy Levels & Hydrogen Spectrum - Shell Energies
Hydrogen energy En = -13.6 / n^2 eV. n=1 -13.6 eV ground state most stable. n=2 -3.4 eV first excited, n=3 -1.51 eV etc. At n infinity 0 eV free electron.
Ionization energy needed to remove electron from ground: 13.6 eV. Excitation energy to go n1 to n2: E2-E1 positive.
When electron jumps down it emits photon h nu = Ei - Ef. When jumps up absorbs photon same energy.
En=-13.6/n^2 eV H | E1 -13.6 ground | E2 -3.4 E3 -1.51 | Ionization 13.6 eV | Photon h nu = Ei-Ef jump down emits up absorbs
Visual Learning Method: Ladder energy levels -13.6, -3.4, -1.51, 0 free, arrows down emission photon, up absorption, ionization arrow, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Energy levels like building floors basement -13.6 deepest. To go from ground to first floor need 10.2 eV ticket. Jumping down releases light like ball dropping makes sound.
Energy Levels & Hydrogen Spectrum
Revision Points - Easy:- Energy negative because bound - need energy to free.
- Ground -13.6 eV needs 13.6 to ionize.
- Jump down gives photon, jump up needs photon.
- Energy difference equals photon energy h nu.
4. Spectral Series - Lyman Balmer Paschen
Rydberg formula: wavenumber 1/lambda = R (1/n1^2 - 1/n2^2) where R=1.097x10^7 m^-1. n2 greater than n1.
Lyman series: jumps to n1=1 n2=2,3... UV region ~91 to 121 nm. Balmer: to n1=2 n2=3,4... visible 364 to 656 nm, H alpha 656 nm red famous. Paschen: to n1=3 n2=4... infrared 820 to 1875 nm. Brackett to n1=4, Pfund to n1=5 both IR.
Series limit when n2 infinity gives shortest lambda: lambda_limit = 1/(R/n1^2). Lyman limit 91.2 nm.
Rydberg 1/lambda=R(1/n1^2-1/n2^2) R=1.097e7 | Lyman to 1 UV 91-121 nm | Balmer to 2 visible 364-656 nm H alpha 656 | Paschen to 3 IR 820-1875 | Limit n2 infinity
Visual Learning Method: Diagram series arrows to n=1 UV, to n=2 visible colours, to n=3 IR, wavelength ranges labelled, Rydberg formula yellow box, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Spectral series like different platforms trains arrive. Lyman platform 1 UV invisible, Balmer platform 2 visible you can see, Paschen platform 3 IR heat you feel not see.
Spectral Series - Lyman Balmer Paschen
Revision Points - Easy:- Rydberg formula gives wavelength of any jump.
- Lyman ends at n=1 UV invisible high energy.
- Balmer ends at n=2 visible - only one we see with eye.
- Paschen Brackett Pfund infrared ends at n=3,4,5.
- H alpha 656 nm red strongest in Balmer.
5. de Broglie & Bohr Quantization - Standing Waves
de Broglie explained why angular momentum quantized. Electron orbit circumference must fit integer wavelengths for standing wave: 2 pi rn = n lambda = n h/p = n h / mv. Rearranging gives mvr = n h/2pi Bohr condition. So Bohr quantization arises from wave nature.
For n=1 one wavelength fits around circle, n=2 two waves etc. Like guitar string fixed both ends only integer half waves.
2 pi rn = n lambda standing wave | lambda=h/mv so mvr=n h/2pi Bohr proved | n=1 one wave around circle | Like guitar string integer waves
Visual Learning Method: Circle orbit with wave wrapped n=1 one loop, n=2 two loops, n=3 three, guitar string analogy, formula 2 pi r = n lambda, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Orbit is like circular running track where your steps must exactly finish lap. Only certain tracks fit integer steps. That fixes allowed radii.
de Broglie & Bohr Quantization
Revision Points - Easy:- Electron wave must close on itself around orbit.
- Circumference = integer times wavelength.
- This gives Bohr angular momentum rule automatically.
- More n more waves fit around circle.
6. Excitation & Ionization - Jumping Electrons
Excitation: electron absorbs photon or collision energy and jumps to higher n. Atom excited short lived ~10^-8 s then falls back emitting photon. Excitation energy E_exc = E2-E1 e.g., n=1 to 2 needs 10.2 eV.
Ionization: electron gets enough to reach n infinity free. Energy needed ionization energy 13.6 eV from ground. After ionization atom becomes positive ion.
Franck Hertz experiment proved quantized energy by shooting electrons through mercury vapour. Current dropped at 4.9 eV multiples because electrons lost energy to excite mercury atoms only at fixed levels.
Excitation jump up needs photon E2-E1 e.g., 10.2 eV 1->2 | Ionization to free 13.6 eV from ground | Excited lives 10^-8 s emits photon falling | Franck Hertz 4.9 eV drops proves quantized
Visual Learning Method: Electron jumping up absorbing photon, down emitting, ionization free, Franck Hertz current vs voltage peaks at 4.9 V, 9.8 V etc., kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Excitation like jumping to higher shelf needs exact energy. Ionization like jumping out of building free. Franck Hertz is like car needing fixed fuel 4.9 litres to climb hill then slows.
Revision Points - Easy:- Excitation needs exact energy difference to go up.
- Ionization frees electron needs 13.6 eV from ground hydrogen.
- Excited state short lived quickly emits photon down.
- Franck Hertz current dips prove energy levels fixed not continuous.
7. Limitations & Refinements - Beyond Bohr
Bohr model works only for hydrogen like one electron atoms. Fails for multi-electron, cannot explain fine structure spectral lines splitting into close lines, Zeeman effect splitting in magnetic field, Stark effect in electric field.
Refinements: Sommerfeld added elliptical orbits introduced azimuthal quantum number l. Later quantum mechanics gave 4 quantum numbers n principal size, l shape, ml orientation, ms spin. Bohr orbits replaced by probability clouds orbitals.
Bohr only H like | Fails fine structure Zeeman Stark multi-electron | Sommerfeld elliptical l | Quantum numbers n l ml ms | Orbits to clouds
Visual Learning Method: Circular vs elliptical orbits, fine structure split, Zeeman magnet splitting one line to three, quantum numbers table, cloud vs orbit, kids Wow!
Daily Analogy: Bohr is like simple map of city with only main road. Real city has lanes, turns, traffic lights fine structure Zeeman need detailed map quantum numbers.
Limitations & Refinements
Revision Points - Easy:- Bohr good only for hydrogen one electron.
- Real lines split in magnetic field Zeeman and have fine structure.
- Sommerfeld added elliptical paths.
- Modern picture uses clouds not fixed orbits and 4 quantum numbers.
8. Applications & Final Revision - Everyday Atoms
