The Living World

1. What is Living? - The Basics
Imagine you have to tell if something is alive. What will you check? Does it grow? Does it make babies? Does it sense? That's what biology does.
Growth - Living grows from inside like you grow bones muscles, non-living grows from outside like mountain grows by adding mud from outside. Reproduction - Living makes similar babies asexual single parent or sexual two parents, non-living can't. Metabolism - Inside you thousands chemical reactions happening to make energy. Cellular - Living made of cells small building blocks. Consciousness - Living senses environment and responds, you feel hot cold, plants sense light and bend.
Part 1A - What is Living - Growth & Reproduction

Part 1B - Biodiversity & Need for Classification

Revision: Living = growth inside, reproduction, metabolism, cellular, consciousness sensing. Biodiversity 1.7-1.8 million species, taxonomy = ID + nomenclature + classification, systematics = taxonomy + evolution.
2. Taxonomic Hierarchy - The Ladder
Imagine arranging 1.7 million species in shelves. You need ladder from big to small. Biggest shelf Kingdom, smallest Species. Like your address: Country → State → District → City → Street → House.
Hierarchy: Kingdom → Phylum/Division → Class → Order → Family → Genus → Species. Mnemonic: King Philip Came Over For Good Soup. Example Human: Kingdom Animalia, Phylum Chordata, Class Mammalia, Order Primates, Family Hominidae, Genus Homo, Species sapiens. Mango: Kingdom Plantae, Division Angiospermae, Class Dicot, Order Sapindales, Family Anacardiaceae, Genus Mangifera, Species indica. As you go down, common characters increase, similarity increases.
Part 2A - Taxonomic Hierarchy - King Philip

Part 2B - Binomial Nomenclature - Two Names

Revision: Hierarchy: K P C O F G S. Human: Animalia Chordata Mammalia Primates Hominidae Homo sapiens. Mango: Plantae Angiospermae Dicot Sapindales Anacardiaceae Mangifera indica. Binomial: Genus capital Species small italic Homo sapiens, rules by Linnaeus universal.
3. Taxonomical Aids - Tools
Imagine you find new plant, how to know its name? You need tools like dictionary. Taxonomical aids are dictionaries for plants animals.
Herbarium - dried pressed plant specimens on paper sheet with label date place collector name, stored in big institutions Kew. Botanical Garden - living plants collection for reference, Kew London biggest, Indian Botanical Garden Howrah. Museum - preserved animals in jars with preservative. Zoological Park Zoo - living animals. Key - analytical tool to identify based on contrasting characters, you choose between two options and reach name. Flora - list of plants of area, Manual - with identification keys, Monograph - detailed study of one taxon.
Part 3A - Taxonomical Aids - Herbarium to Key

Revision: Herbarium dried pressed plants with label, Botanical Garden living plants Kew Howrah, Museum preserved specimens jars, Zoo living animals, Key analytical tool contrasting characters, Flora list of plants area, Manual keys, Monograph one taxon detail.
