Voice & Narration
Topic 7: Active/Passive & Direct/Indirect Speech
1 Active & Passive Voice (The Swap)
The Core Rule: In Active voice, the subject does the action. In Passive voice, the subject receives the action. To convert, you must execute the "Subject-Object Swap" and introduce the V3 (Past Participle).
- The Subject becomes the Object (usually preceded by "by").
- The Object becomes the Subject.
- The Main Verb ALWAYS changes to V3 (e.g., write → written).
- The Tense of the sentence DOES NOT CHANGE (Unlike Narration).
Active to Passive Transformation Grid
★ Voice Tense Conversion Master Table
| Tense | Active Voice Structure | Passive Voice Structure (The Rule) |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Present | Principal signs the report. | The report is signed by the Principal. (is/am/are + V3) |
| Present Continuous | Principal is signing the report. | The report is being signed. (is/am/are + being + V3) |
| Present Perfect | Principal has signed the report. | The report has been signed. (has/have + been + V3) |
| Simple Past | Principal signed the report. | The report was signed. (was/were + V3) |
| Modals (Can/Must/Should) | We must sign the report. | The report must be signed. (Modal + be + V3) |
⚠️ UPSC Voice Trap: Imperative Sentences
Commands and orders (often seen in administration) do not have a standard Subject. You MUST use "Let" or "You are ordered to".
Active: "Issue the circular immediately."
Passive (Option A - TRAP): The circular should be issued immediately.
Passive (Option B - CORRECT): Let the circular be issued immediately.
2 Direct & Indirect Speech (The Backshift)
The Core Rule: When reporting what someone said in the past, you must "backshift" the tense backwards in time, because the action of speaking is now in the past.
- Remove commas and inverted commas (" ").
- Use the conjunction "that" (for statements).
- Change the Tense (Present → Past).
- Change time/place markers (Here → There, Today → That day).
★ Narration Tense & Time Conversion Table
| Direct Speech (Inside " ") | Indirect Speech (Backshifted) | Time/Word Conversions |
|---|---|---|
| Simple Present (writes) | Simple Past (wrote) | Now → Then |
| Present Continuous (is writing) | Past Continuous (was writing) | Today → That day |
| Present Perfect (has written) | Past Perfect (had written) | Tomorrow → The next day |
| Simple Past (wrote) | Past Perfect (had written) | Yesterday → The previous day |
| Will / Shall / Can | Would / Should / Could | Here → There |
🚫 UPSC Narration Trap: The "No-Shift" Zones
Examiners will aggressively test the exceptions where you DO NOT change the tense in Indirect Speech. Do not blindly backshift!
- Universal Truths / Scientific Facts:
Direct: The teacher said, "The Earth revolves around the sun."
Indirect: The teacher said that the Earth revolves (NOT revolved) around the sun. - Reporting verb is in Present/Future Tense:
Direct: The Principal says, "The school is closed."
Indirect: The Principal says that the school is closed. (Because "says" is present tense, inside tense stays same).
3 Exam Application (Admin Scenarios)
| Topic Tested | Question Sentence | Expert Solution & Logic |
|---|---|---|
| Passive (Interrogative) | Active: Who approved the school budget? | Passive: By whom was the school budget approved? (Who becomes 'By whom'. Structure remains interrogative: Wh-word + verb + subject + V3). |
| Narration (Interrogative) | Direct: The Inspector said to the clerk, "Where are the files?" | Indirect: The Inspector asked the clerk where the files were. ('Said to' becomes 'asked'. No 'that' is used for Wh- questions. Sentence structure changes from Question to Statement: Subject comes before Verb 'were'). |
| Narration (Imperative) | Direct: The Vice-Principal said to the peon, "Lock the gate." | Indirect: The Vice-Principal ordered the peon to lock the gate. (Imperatives use 'to' + V1. 'Said to' changes to command word like 'ordered' or 'instructed'). |
